A little bit of history:
Dr Abraham Maslow (he of the ‘Hierarchy of Needs’ fame), first noticed what he described as ‘peak experiences’ in the 1960s, as “moments of highest happiness and fulfilment”. Maslow’s theories' focussed on the psychology of healthy people and studies suggested common triggers for peak experience included art, nature, relationships, creative work, music, knowledge, and self-examination.
More recently, man-mountain, Tony Robbins, describes discovering your peak state as “Taking control of your consistent emotions and beginning to consciously and deliberately reshape your daily experience of life”. He proposes the life-blood trinity of peak state is: physiology, focus and language.
Physiology about learning that how we use our body affects how we feel mentally and emotionally.
Focus about concentrating on the things we want and the goals we are striving toward, instead of the things holding us back.
Language about knowing that how we talk to ourselves governs how we function in the world.
At Peak State you’ll find reminders, tools and techniques to allow you to perform at your best, in life, love, work and play.
This doesn’t mean that you have to climb a mountain every day, make heaps of cash, have 2.4 children, or pay off your mortgage by the time you’re 23 (unless, of course, those are your specific goals!). It means making sure that your life works for you; that you feel empowered to live your life the way you want to, not how anyone else thinks you should.
Maybe your goal is wanting to work three days a week instead of five, maybe you’ve climbed the corporate ladder to the top and realised you’ve had your ladder leaning against the wrong wall all along and need to make a change, maybe you want a better relationship with your loved one, or with yourself.
In super-human terms (because we’re all super-human!); it’s that motivational saying on a mug that makes you take that meeting, that t-shirt that makes you feel strong, that note-book that holds your dreams and goals, that song that makes you move, that smell that makes you smile, that taste that oozes security and confidence. It’s all the things that help you change your energy by changing your physiology, shifting your focus and realising the power of the words we use (most usually about ourselves – you see? Hence calling us all super-human!).
At Peak State, we hope to help you have tools and visual prompts to be able to easily get yourself into a peak performance state, for those times when you need to make a tough decision, or stop yourself from spiralling emotionally, or fight the fear. And, hopefully, with practice, you’ll journey through every day with a trip to Peak State.
Around 15 years ago, I had an idea to make life-affirming, motivational products to help people going through struggles or in need of help beating the fear that kept them stuck. This idea kept coming and going, ebbing and flowing, exciting and scaring over the years.
The trouble is, I was, well, stuck herself! I realised that for so long I’d been living my life for other people, based on other people’s ideas of what I ‘should’ be doing, and living solely to support and nurture the goals and dreams of people around me. I had got to the point where I felt “insignificant in my own life”. I’d gone from a world-travelling, bungee jumping, sky-diving, happy, free, peaceful little soul, to running around fulfilling everyone else’s needs and wants, my comfort zone getting smaller and smaller, feeling emotionally battered and bruised. Defeated. Pretty sh*tty, huh?
So, my personal development journey began. Reading books, watching webinars, attending seminars, undertaking training, completing challenges, breaking out of her comfort zone, making tough decisions, changing and ending relationships, taking charge of my life. Learning from John Assaraf, Bob Procter, Rhonda Byrne, Tony Robbins, T Harv Eker, Joseph McClendon III, Mary Morissey, Dr Srini Pillay, Oprah Winfrey, Natalie Ledwell, Buddha, and personal empowerment coaches to name a few. By 2017, I was so at peace with myself, my mind was so quiet, my thoughts so clear, that I jacked in my frustrating job and gave myself 6 months off!!
As Tony Robbins would say:
“Great success comes from total commitment.
If you want to take the island, you have to burn the frickin’ boats”
Can you imagine just having six months off? Everyday being free to do whatever you please? No commute to undertake, no colleagues to be disappointed with, so much time to watch those movies, go for those walks, cook and eat those meals, see those friends and family!! And, most importantly, take the leap to progress with the 15 year old vision and launch Peak State.
So, who is this person, our founder, our friend. Well, it’s . . .
. . . me! Ta-daa! Ok, so this is an illustrated photo of me but, Hello! (*Waves manically from the screen. BTW, I have been told I have ‘Forrest Gump wave!)
Hi everyone! Take a look. I’m a real, live person, who’s had real life ups and downs, and has weathered many storms. And I really am living proof that:
This pic above is me on a little Greek island that was the birth-place of my maternal grandmother. I had always wanted to visit so instead of just wanting to, I did!
This is also me in one of my ‘Peak State Poses’! This is how I feel most free, most empowered, most joyful most content; having been out in the warm fresh air, having a beautiful view, being slightly (ok, very) dishevelled, having no time restrictions and sharing that unrestricted time with a loved-one, and BOOM! Peak State Pose comes out!
Looking back over old photos I realised that I had stood in this pose before, before I even knew what peak state was, at times when I was happy and free. Now I do it a lot! It energises me and helps me feel so grateful for everything I have.
This photo below, was taken last year, during a period of quiet contemplation and self-reflection, where I realised I needed to make another, big, nerve-wracking change. Three months later, it was done. Inertia was bested, momentum won over.
Life has changed a lot in the last few years, and that’s because I made it change. I made conscious decisions, fought the fear, ignored people’s negative opinions, and did things my way. I now have a great little circle of loved ones (family and friends) busting out their power moves to get into Peak State! Some are great motivators, great at visualisation, learned listeners, heartfelt huggers or givers of tough-love, when it’s required!
I, and everyone who supports the process and development here at Peak State, hope that you will become part of the Peak State tribe, and attract other Peak State-ers to you with your captivating vibe!
Let’s go!
